Louís José de Orbegoso
Louís José de Orbegoso, a member of the Peruvian military, but sided with Gamarra’s enemies, the liberals. Orbegoso became the interim president, but those who supported Gamarra questioned the legitimacy of this move. Orbegoso’s fellow military members saw him as a weak leader, someone who followed orders rather than give them. Many believed the liberal leaders controlled his actions. Hardly a month after his appointment, an uprising broke out in support of Gamarra. The rebels claimed Orbegoso had contact with Santa Cruz to finalize a confederation. What surprised the Gamarra supporters was their unpopularity regardless of the fact the city rejected the idea of a federation. According to observers, much of the discontent formed from ex-military men not receiving what they considered appropriate compensation for their service. This encouraged the disgruntled soldiers to fight against Gamarra. [1]
